Housing
In Córdoba there is a wide range of rental homes, as well as a healthy residential market for new and second-hand homes.
There are no specific neighbourhoods for expatriates, although there is a strong preference for the old town, one of the largest in size. The place of residence depends on individual preferences, office location, age group, income, etc.
The average rental prices in the city of Córdoba are 50% lower than those in Madrid or Barcelona, and 25% lower than in Malaga or Seville.
Education
Córdoba has a wide range of schools that covers all educational levels.
Foreigners residing in the city have the right to compulsory basic education and can choose between public, chartered (privately managed, co-financed by the State) or private schools, including bilingual and international schools.
Living costs
As with salaries and operating costs, Córdoba offers predictable and very competitive living costs compared to other large cities in Spain and the rest of Europe.
Tax residents in Córdoba (as in the rest of the country) are required to pay taxes on their annual worldwide income. Córdoba is the only city in the world with four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, giving Cordoba an unmatched historical and monumental heritage:
- The Mosque-Cathedral, one of the jewels of Córdoba, is the most important monument in the entire Islamic West. Declared a World Heritage Site in 1984, it is unique in the world for housing a Christian Cathedral inside.
- The historic centre of Córdoba, a World Heritage Site since 1994, is one of the largest and best-preserved historic centres in Europe.
- The Fiesta de los Patios de Córdoba, which takes place the first 2 weeks of May, is a unique cultural expression.
- The Caliphate City of Medina Azahara, an archaeological site of what was the palatine city built in the 10th century as a symbol of the power of the Caliphate of Córdoba.
Gastronomy
Like the rest of Cordoba’s rich cultural heritage, the local cuisine is impregnated with the essence of the different civilizations that have passed through the city.
The quality of the local produce is reflected in seven designations of origin:
- Four for olive oil – PDO Baena, PDO Priego de Córdoba, PDO Lucena and PDO Montoro-Adamuz. Cordoba is also the second world producer of olive oil, only behind Jaén.
- A designation for wine, Montilla-Moriles.
- A designation for vinegar, Montilla-Moriles.
- A designation for Iberian ham -Valle de los Pedroches.
In addition, Cordoba has a wide range of renowned taverns and restaurants that makes the best use of local produce.
Environment
Córdoba is located in a privileged natural environment, in the heart of the Guadalquivir valley.
The province is dotted with landscapes of extraordinary ecological value, such as the natural parks of Sierra de Hornachuelos, the Sierra de Cardeña-Montoro, the Subbéticas Sierras and the Lagunas del Sur nature reserve, which offer an ideal environment to enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, mountain biking, bird watching, fishing, etc.
Just 20 minutes from the city, in the heart of the Sierra Morena, you can find the Real Club de Campo de Córdoba with its 18-hole golf course.
Climate
Protected by the Sierra Morena to the north, Córdoba enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. The average annual temperature is around 18ºC, with more than 3,390 hours of sunshine per year.
Healthcare
Córdoba has a very prestigious health centre, the Reina Sofia Hospital, a benchmark in the region. The city also has several high-level private hospitals and several leading national clinics. All of them contribute to making the city’s health care system difficult to beat.
